I don’t believe in ghosts. I don’t believe in the supernatural, nor in the possibility of souls living on after death. It must surely be highly unlikely that in the modern era with our advancements in science and technology, such things can exist without us having found definitive proof by way of direct evidence. But of course we all love a ghost story and we all love a mystery, especially a mystery which cannot be explained away by any semblance of logic. The alarm clock is sounding, dragging me out of the vivid dreams which have no doubt been triggered by the need to rise early. Funny, for most of my working life a 5:10 alarm after about five hours’ sleep was the norm for 25 years or more – now, after three years of retirement, 6:30 feels like early morning and there is a glue holding my eyelids in place. Alighting from the collectivo in front of the church in the village of San Juan Chamula is to enter a different world, higher still up the mountains from San Cristobal and deeper still into the world of the indigenous tribes of Chiapas.
