Bring Me Sunshine
Our “best case scenario” for most of this year has been that by mid July, travel restrictions would start to be lifted and we just might be able to get away. We are very excited now that such a scenario is becoming reality – so excited in fact that we have booked our flights to get away for the entire summer.
As of July we are now 19 months into our retirement, a retirement which was meant to be endless travel seeing as much of the world as possible but which instead has been…well, we all know the end to that sentence. In the end we were travelling for 148 days of 2020 but so far this year have not been able to leave these shores at all.
Now, as long as nothing changes, we will be back travelling in less than two weeks’ time. Yep, we’ve committed, and booked flights, although for now we’re going to keep schtum about precisely where we’re headed. It’s Europe, because long haul travel is unlikely to be on the agenda for a while, but where is ultimately included on this trip will depend to some degree on whether border crossings become more easy.
It was for a while our intention to book one way flights only, but the new rules resulting from Brexit mean that we aren’t able to enter the EU without proof of a return flight within the 90-day visa free period. So we now have flights out in mid July and flights home in early October. All being well, that’s an 84-day adventure. Eighty four days of sunshine, blue sky and sea, mountains, exciting journeys, food, drink and experiences.
Not wishing to “count our chickens”, but we are definitely letting ourselves get excited. Our travel bug is calling loudly…

I hope all goes well for you and that Messrs Whitty and Vallance don’t attempt to throw a spanner in the works! Fingers crossed!
Phil & Michaela
We were more worried about Merkel than Whitty – but we seem to have seen her off. Rather like her football team.!!

So excited for you! We’re hoping to get away too at some point but can’t commit to such a long adventure so for now we’re sitting tight to see what will be possible in a month or two 🙂 Looking forward to reading all about your adventures!

Thanks Sarah, here’s hoping we can all get away soon…

I am currently travelling in the Benelux and I have not seen any controls so far, it is mainly about leaving your island. Good luck!
Phil & Michaela
Yes, we are pretty sure that once we’ve escaped England, things will work out fine

Hooray, hooray – you’ll soon be able to restart your post-retirement travel plans. So happy for you both! I wonder if we’ll see you on the road as Steven and I have just booked flights for a trip to Europe from September 14-November 21st! We booked hotels a while back but were reluctant to book flights until last week.
I, like your other followers, can’t wait to find out where your travel adventures take you. Have a blast wherever you go.

Very exciting guys! I wait with bated breath for the great reveal. We are having a wonderful time touring East Serbia at the moment and indeed each day we’ve been telling ourselves “Yes, THIS is what life is all about”. Is there much to prepare for the trip, COVID inconveniences aside?
Phil & Michaela
Only the usual, we’ve booked the first two beds to cover about 10 days but after that we plan a mix of booking next step on line just before each move, and just bowling up and finding a billet. We have our COVID bits sorted so it’s just counting the days (and even the hours) now. Oh, and watching the odd football match….

Good luck with your trip. In the last five days we have taken our caravan from home in Victoria through central NSW to outback Queensland. Arrived in Charleville to set up just in time. Apparently it will be raining until tomorrow morning and this place doesn’t usually have rain anytime. Anyhow looking forward to sunshine too in the days to come. Cheers, Mark
Phil & Michaela
Many thanks Mark, just hope nothing stops us but with recent news reports we think things will go to plan. Hope it stops raining for you and you get that much needed sunshine. Enjoy your trip, happy travels 😊
