Countdown To Rio
It’s that time again. Never mind counting the days, we’re just arriving at the stage where we’ll be counting the hours until we lock the doors behind us and head to Heathrow to start our next great adventure. The exotic, vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro awaits, one of the world’s greatest carnivals about to begin, romantic sounding locations like Copacabana, Ipanema and Corcovado soon to be on our doorstep. It’s a little over a week until the journey begins.
After waking up on New Year’s Day many thousands of miles from home in each of the last two years, this feels like a late start for us and the wanderlust is not so much an itching in our feet as a yearning in our souls. We are very, very ready to get travelling again.
Looking back over our retirement years for comparison, our first travel year of 2020 had also not yet begun. It was on January 29th of that year that we flew to Bangkok, the world now our oyster after our recent retirement, the first of what would be many long journeys opening up before us. Little did we know as we sat here four years ago in a state of excitement that the strange news stories emanating from an obscure city called Wuhan would soon impact our travel year. In the end though, we still managed to travel for 148 days that year, despite the restrictions.
In 2021, January was a month spent in the grip of lockdown and so again, at this point in the year, we had ventured nowhere yet, and in fact it wouldn’t be until July that we were finally able to flee these shores. We spent that summer travelling through Greece and the Greek islands before heading further afield later in the year.
And so to January 2022 and by now the travelling dream was once again becoming reality. We spent the whole of January touring Costa Rica, moving on to California on the first day of the following month. Last year, 2023, the month of January was spent travelling around Panama, not putting our feet on British soil until the 26th.
Now, after those two years of barely seeing any January days in England, we have been here for the whole of the month and the travel bug is calling very loudly as we tick off the last few days on the calendar.
We fly from Heathrow on the evening of February 5th. After that the next time we will see home will be towards the end of May.
Our next story begins in Rio.

Latitude Adjustment: A Tale of Two Wanderers
You are going to love Brazil. Hope you get to see as much as possible. The food and Caipirinha’s are awesome! Here is a link to the food of Brazil from our friends at Above Us Only Skies:

Safe travels!

Oh I like the look of that lot, we are going to be all over Brazilian food! Thank you for that mouthwatering link guys. We have a route planned to see as much of the country as possible but who knows whether we’ll stick to it!

I’m amazed that you were able to travel so much in 2020! Non-essential travel was extremely difficult here (especially to leave the country – there was a two-week quarantine) and only eased after the vaccines started to become available in December of that year although restrictions around travel carried well into 2021.
Safe travels to Rio. Looking forward to your posts. Cheers.

Back in 2020, each time the UK Government opened the airports, we headed off to anywhere which didn’t have quarantine. We ended up with lengthy stays in Croatia and Turkey, then doing two weeks’ quarantine each time we got home. Brazil is very exciting…

I do trust you are going to try the food referred to in the link on Latitude Adjustment’s comment….never mind the carnival, get down to the serious stuff!
Phil & Michaela
We will be all over Brazilian food, Helen! Can’t wait to get tucked in.

How wonderful! Sounds like you’ve well and truly been bitten by the travel bug! We were fortunate in 2021 to “escape” in the middle of two lockdowns and never looked back! Enjoy your coming adventure. We set off today for Vietnam. 😊
Phil & Michaela
Have a wonderful visit, such a splendid country

Have fun! I hope you love Brazil as much as we do!! We’re going to Morocco and Portugal this spring so I’ll be re reading your posts. Let me know if you have any advice/recommendations. Maggie
Phil & Michaela
Yes, we know a lot about Morocco, could give a million recommendations! So many great places but definitely try and make it out into the Sahara. And Fes. And Marrakech. And Chefchaouen. And….And….And…!

Travels Through My Lens
I hope you have a fabulous time in Rio, and your other destinations. Love your photo of Tunnel View; Yosemite is one of the most beautiful of the US National Parks in my humble opinion. Safe travels!
Phil & Michaela
We absolutely fell in love with Yosemite. Wonderful, wonderful place.

Exciting times ahead, I hope you will have a wonderful time. Carnival in Rio is the best in the world in my opinion, experiencing it at the Sambódromo is incredible. But also make sure to enjoy some of the many Carnival street parties, they are great fun. Have a few caipirinhas there for me 😀
Phil & Michaela
So looking forward to this trip, Gilda, it’s going to be brilliant…

Exciting times, especially to be in Rio for carnival – I can’t wait to see those photos in particular! We’ll be just behind you, flying out from Heathrow to Mexico City on 10th February 😀 But as usual for us, it will be a much shorter trip, just three weeks. By the time you get home at the end of May we’ll also have fitted in a short break in Sardinia and I should be in Croatia or Montenegro (depending on your exact return date). I enjoy our ‘little and often’ approach but I also envy you your major odysseys!
Phil & Michaela
Enjoy your trips, Sarah, we’re likely to be in the UK for the whole of June so that could be the month when we finally meet up for a London beer!
Toonsarah
Sounds good to me! I’ll be away at the start of that month but returning on the 3rd so that leaves plenty of month to try to fix something 🙂
notesoflifeuk
Wow, I hope you have an amazing time!

If you can, look into a guided tour of one of Rio’s favelas. Though it was rather hairy, with a temporary lockdown in a furniture store while a shootout was going on, walking around the favela for several hours with a local was an experience not to be missed.
Phil & Michaela
It’s on our wish list Annie!
Phil & Michaela
Thank you!

I’ve never been to Brazil! Looking forward to hearing about your journey 🙂

I’m wildly excited for you (and a little jealous if I’ve being honest) that you are heading to Rio! Rio is by far one of the greatest cities I’ve been to and I can’t wait to follow along with your adventure 🙂
Alison
Have fun you two and looking forward to seeing and hearing all about it.
Have just booked our flights for UK, arrive on 17 May and leave on 21 June with maybe two weeks in the Azores. So we can definitely catch up in June with Sarah also. Maybe somewhere in London. I’m not sure I could spend four months travelling!
Phil & Michaela
These days we could definitely do even longer than four months, we just love the slower pace of long term travel. And yes, let’s try and meet up in June, that would be great! 😊

I can’t read the name Ipanema without remembering the delightful days spent there. Finding the warmth of summer in the middle of a Canadian/European winter is in itself a beautiful prospect, but then there’s so much to enjoy. Safe trip!
Phil & Michaela
Thank you bud, we are very much looking forward to it.

“I’ve been to Rio de Janeiro, I love the fun in the sun and the people. In Rio de Janeiro, it’s exciting to see, no matter where you go.” Song by Barry White
Well, all I can add, is: Enjoy your new adventure guys!
Phil & Michaela
Ahh, big Barry! Can’t wait to get going now, Corna. So looking forward to it….

Ah so it’s Brazil you’re off to next. Good stuff, wishing you both a pleasant flight and a (undoubtedly) brilliant stay.
Phil & Michaela
Absolutely can’t wait to get going again now, Leighton. Been too long since we were on the move…
