It Dropped Into My Inbox And….
Our 2017 trip to India incorporated an overnight sleeper train journey from Agra to Varanasi, and for reasons we can’t quite explain we have never unsubscribed from emails from the India railway company. Recently, one of their emails landed and I did one of those double takes.
“Michaela, listen to this……”
Now, anyone who knows us, knows that we don’t like to be organised by others, we like to travel completely independently and sort things for ourselves. It gives us freedom, and of course it’s hugely cheaper. It’s also true to say that neither of us are what you would call spiritual, and we’re certainly not religious. So why would an organised trip entitled “Journey Of Enlightenment” capture our attention?
Well, maybe because one thing we’ve learned on our travels is that we like to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, and that’s a thing which works both ways – if you don’t like being organised by others, then being organised by others is out of your comfort zone, at least to a certain degree.
So, as fiercely independent and decidedly non-spiritual travellers, we have decided to embark on this journey of enlightenment – an eight day train journey through India, connecting a number of sacred Buddhist sites and tracing the life of Buddha. Along the way we will study and learn about Buddhism, about self awareness, about the spiritualism of Buddhist beliefs…. and maybe even about enlightenment.
The journey will start and end in Delhi, will cross India and take us briefly into Nepal – and who knows what we will discover along the way.
Once the eight days are up, we will be rejoining the South East Asia journey which we were on when COVID struck – from Delhi we will fly to Hanoi, recommence our tour of Vietnam from north to south, then move on to Cambodia where we will at last get to visit Angkor Wat. The intention is that we will use the 30-day visa to the full in each country…and then maybe return to Singapore.
Our “enlightenment” begins in a little over three weeks’ time….

Your latest journey into enlightenment sounds very intriguing. I am looking forward to following along. India is definitely on my travel wish list.
Lovely that you are going back to Vietnam to finish up that trip and then onto Cambodia. I am sure you will have a great time.
Brian and I are in Brazil, loving being back here and particularly looking forward to the famous Rio Carnival.

Once again Phil another incredible trip by the sounds of it. I love all the Buddha quotes feeling them to be so true to life. Looking forward to reading about your trip, sounds like it’s meant to be!

Like you Ali, those quotes and mantras intrigue us….which I guess is why we’re doing it

Wow, that train journey sounds rather special, I hope it does prove enlightening for you both – although whether that will be into Buddhism or into the potential benefits of a bit of pre-organisation, or both, who knows! And I’m so glad you’re finally able to pick up your 2020 trip where you left off 😀 I’m going to enjoy following your adventures!
Phil & Michaela
I know you mentioned your interest in Buddhism….we’ll see what it brings huh

Oh Great! Are you going to Lumbini in Nepal? Too bad it’s not to the mountains though. Sounds like an interesting way to see the sites in India and Nepal.
Phil & Michaela
Yes, Lumbini is the brief call in Nepal. The mountains are on our list but our priority for this year was to revisit the unfinished business of the COVID interrupted trip from 2020….can’t wait to get back to South East Asia, Maggie

This looks to be an amazing trip encompassing many exciting stops! Well done on getting the most out of your visas. Usually we get three months on a visitor visa in each country, has something changed or is it different for Brits?
