A Short One This Time….To The Snow
Yes, yes. We know we’ve only been back from Panama for a week but it’s time to be hitting the travel trail again, though only for a short one week break this time. What’s more, just to cap the fact that we’re really feeling the cold English weather after the heat and humidity of Jamaica and Panama, we’re heading off somewhere much colder, up into the Alps where there is plenty of snow.
Anyone who is kind or mad enough to read and remember stuff we write in these posts might know that I absolutely love train travel. I was born and bred in a railway town (it’s a city now), my family all worked for the railway and a huge part of my love of travel was born out of European train journeys I enjoyed as a child (more about that HERE).
This next trip is in part a dream for lovers of rail travel. Starting with a flight to Milan, we will travel by rail from there to Zermatt, high up in the Swiss Alps and in the shadow of the Matterhorn, a journey which will incorporate trips on both the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express, the latter being the famed train with panoramic windows through which to view the beautiful scenery.
Unusually for us we are not travelling alone this time – we will be meeting up in Milan with my ex brother-in-law Nigel and his wife Alison. Back in 1997 I was best man at their wedding, and, as their silver wedding anniversary was affected by the COVID era, this trip is in part a celebration of that occasion.
With such an exciting and scenic train journey to enjoy, we are hoping for bright mountain sunshine to illuminate the dazzling white snow. Like this perhaps….

Something I would love to do one day – train travel (we don’t really have that opportunity here in SA … and definitely not in snow). I am really looking forward to see your photos on this trip!!

You haven’t had time to unpack, wash, iron and pack again!

Ah but…clothes for the rainforest and desert islands versus clothes for the Alps… not a lot of crossover there…

Ooh, this sounds fun – I love train travel! Although being much less keen on snow I’d maybe choose to do it in the spring or summer 😉 Looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing the photos!

Oh what a fantastic trip! Seeing those beautiful mountains in the snow from the window of a train is sure to be amazing. Can’t wait to read all about it! 🙂

One of the highlights of my life was traveling in the observation car of the California Zephyr through the Sierra Navadas just after a heavy snowfall (in April!) . It was truly magical. I can only imagine what you will encounter on your ride. Wishing you clear skies!

A great change in temperatures Phil, looks magnificent. Must feel very cosy on the train, breathtaking views as well.

This is great. After our experiences with train travel in Europe we love traveling by train. Your trip looks awesome. We will have to check out those train journeys. Enjoy and watch out leaving your room naked!
