That Was 2022
When we retired at the end of 2019, full of wide eyed enthusiasm about seeing the world and feeling like the entire world was our oyster, we had a vision of what a year would look like. This was of course before we had any inkling that something very nasty was about to escape from China and have something of an impact on those plans. Resourceful as we were in ‘20 and ‘21 (we travelled as much as we could and more than most), 2022 has probably been the first year which really did match the dreams we had at the start.
As a year which started in Costa Rica closes in Panama, we can reflect on a year when we visited 11 countries, have been away for 264 days and slept in 71 different beds. So this was how we managed to “catch ‘22”, so to speak….

Heyjude
Gosh, it’s been quite exhausting keeping up with you two. Time for a rest? Maybe not. I wonder where in the world you’ll be heading next? Time for the southern hemisphere or maybe Asia? Japan? There’s still a lot of world out there as long as you have money in the bank. Stay well and safe travels in 2023
Jude xx
PS Maybe an additional heading – things/places/people to avoid?
Phil & Michaela
Thank you Jude….if we’d done that for Egypt, it would have been to avoid just about everybody!!
Heyjude
🤣

Stunning recap with all the various categories listed for each location! 264 nights on the road – simply amazing. Looking forward to reading what places entice you to visit in 2023. May it be another year full of wonder and good health for both of you.
Phil & Michaela
Thank you Annie…hope you’re back on the trail soon
Laura
Wow- this post is incredibly inspiring! So many bucket list items checked off. I am intrigued about the mention of the Star Wars house in Tunisia! What a beautiful year of travel you’ve both had. I’m so happy 2022 matched the vision of your retirement dream 😊💗
Phil & Michaela
Thank you so much, especially for the word “inspiring”…. as retired people, if there’s one thing we’d like to achieve with our blog, it’s to inspire people to realise that being our age is an opportunity for enormous fun, not the beginning of the end! Ah there’s more detail on the Star Wars thing if you go to Africa/Tunisia, and scroll down…if you want to!
Andrew Petcher
Where are you going next?
Phil & Michaela
Well we won’t be back in the UK from the current trip until January 26th. Early Feb we have a brief trip to Switzerland for an exciting train experience. After that we do have plans for our next two longer trips (March-May then probably June-Sept) but at this early stage those are subject to change.
Alison
Happy New year to you both
You have been to so many places, it’s incredible. Do you have a favourite place or a favourite event, so many to choose from. Are you adding more things to your bucket list as you learn about what’s out there. I’ve never heard of some of the places you’ve been, now you’ve put them on the map though. We may cross paths one day 🙂
Phil & Michaela
That would be good x
Phil & Michaela
Oh and yes the bucket list grows as it gets things crossed off!

I’m so glad you’ve finally had the travel year you dreamed of! I’ve had so much pleasure from following your travels, and I love the way you’ve summarised them here 🙂 If you don’t mind I may pinch an idea or two for the round-up of my own rather more limited travels that I’m planning for later this week?
Here’s to many more travels for all of us in 2023!
Phil & Michaela
Ah Sarah there’s no such thing as pinching ideas when it comes to travel blogging – just sharing thoughts and styles! Pinch away! Yep, all the same good wishes to you too.
Latitude Adjustment: A Tale of Two Wanderers
Ah, outstanding recap of a fantastic year! Love your idea of a bed count 🙂 And we’re glad you were able to fully live your travel dream after a couple of “iffy” Covid years. What’s next after Panama? Headed to South America anytime soon? Our door is always open. HAPPY NEW YEAR from John and me!
