Leaving The UK Again
It may be just a little bit harder than usual to leave the UK this autumn. Rampant inflation, soaring energy bills, a clueless and incompetent Government who have set about destroying both the economy and the nation’s reputation in one go, rail, bus and mail strikes….these are all things which will really make us wish we’d stayed at home.
For those unfamiliar with the sarcasm of British humour, welcome.
So it’s with absolutely nothing approaching a heavy heart that our plans for autumn and winter travel are coming together. This Monday, 3rd October, I’m off to Spain for a few days – but not with Michaela who is spending a few days with Mum. Spain will be a story of beer, tapas and football…more to follow on that one.
Straight after that, Michaela and I will be off to Italy for ten days for a tale of two cities. After that and as the end of October approaches it will be time for our customary autumn Cornwall visit which this year will cross into early November.
And then in November, after a couple of weeks at home, our next long trip will begin as we head across the world to new destinations, not returning home until late January.
Never mind head ruling heart or vice versa, it’s our itchy feet that rule the roost here….

I totally agree about the cluelessness of our new PM and government – is it feasible that they could even be worse than the previous incumbents??? Glad to hear you have plenty of plans in the offing to escape! Spain sounds like it will be fun, Italy is always marvellous (which two cities, I wonder?) and I’m sure you have exciting plans for your longer trip! Meanwhile we have plans for a few weeks away at the end of this month / early November, and again in February – helping to make the winter seem shorter 🙂

Funny how winter seems longer as you get older isn’t it…

Oh, I dunno. To me winters still seem as long as they always were – but the summers seem shorter…

I think citizens’ disapproval of their governments is universal! We do our share (maybe more than our share) of griping about ours, for sure. Looking so forward to seeing where you end up!!

Oh, enjoy the tapas in Spain! Italy, ah that will be great reading (for me of course) and always love your posts about Cornwall. Can’t wait to see where I’m going “to tour” with you guys over Christmas. I wonder … will it be snowy or sunny?
Heyjude
An excellent time to escape this madness! And at least your utility bills will be negligible. We are seriously beginning to think about a bolt-hole in the Med. I remember escaping from the chaos in the UK in 1978 – catching one of the few trains out onto the continent. I wonder where you two are escaping to…

Can’t wait to see where you guys will end up at at the end of the year!

Ah – wonderful …. enjoy every moment…

I can’t agree more, our government appears to have lost the plot.
Your travel plans to Italy, Spain and Cornwall sounds lovely, these are all places that we love visiting.
My guess for your winter getaway is somewhere in Asia. We are also thinking of our next adventure.
Phil & Michaela
Hi Gilda – not Asia this time, but we’ve definitely got one eye on picking up where we left off in Vietnam when COVID struck – most likely February next year

I feel pretty sure the current UK gov’t incumbents haven’t lost their plot: tug forelocks to their masters, enrich the wealthy and sod the poor…
Phil & Michaela
True enough!!

It sounds great to see you going on a long journey far away, it makes me dream.
Suzanne@PictureRetirement
My guess is Australia/New Zealand. No particular reason, just seems to be absent from your travels.
Phil & Michaela
No not this time Suzanne, though that area is as yet unexplored and is clawing its way up the league table!

Ooh, if we’re playing guessing games I’m going for somewhere in South America as you enjoyed Mexico and Belize so much!

Not a million miles out, Sarah…

Ah Phil, “good times” as an old friend of mine was fond of saying. Looking forward to all these reveals, particularly the football one. Hope it all goes smoothly and anticipating, as always, your write ups.

Enjoy your time in Spain and Italy! We just spent a week in both those countries in August. I’m sure the temperature is much more comfortable now that it’s fall.

Looking forward to reading about Spain and Italy! I bet Cornwall in the fall is lovely! 🙂

When the going gets tough, the tough get going on international trips! There are so many interesting places to go, and your trips are always epic. I am excited to hear which stadiums you will be visiting in Spain, and which are your favorite tapa and beer pairings. Ensaladilla rusa and Cruzcampo?
Phil & Michaela
Cruzcampo is playing a big part here, Joe!

Things do look very bleak indeed in the UK and the papers just really ramp up the bad news. Seems like you have arrived at a good solution! Looking forward to hearing about your next journey..s!
