When I’m 64…..
Will you still need me, will you still feed me…so went the Beatles lyric. Well, I’m about to find out whether Michaela will still need and feed, birthday greetings, bottle of wine, and all of those things, because I am actually 64 today, and “celebrating” (if that’s the right word) a second successive lockdown birthday. I don’t think we really thought, on my 63rd, that we would be back in the same situation a year later.
There have been some rather more exotic locations for our previous birthdays, most notably the year before COVID, on the occasion of my 62nd, when we were staying with a Bedouin family in their home close to Petra in Jordan. Unbeknown to me, Michaela had told Ahmed and his family that April 8th was significant, so when we returned from our day’s trekking with Ahmed, I had no inkling that something was lined up.
As was our daily custom, we joined the family for herbal tea in their garden in the late afternoon prior to taking dinner in the house – on this occasion the traditional Bedouin meal of mansaf. These times were very sociable as many members of our host family would come and go during the evening, though tonight there seemed to be even more activity than normal.
I still hadn’t cottoned on, right up to the point where Ahmed led us through to a room filled with family, and filled with all manner of sweet birthday treats, with much laughter and good cheer. I have to say it was one of my best and most memorable birthdays….the remaining photos speak louder than words….

“Doing the garden…. digging the weeds…” Happy Birthday Phil! It’s fun reminiscing about past birthdays across the globe. This particular Jordanian chapter looks fantastic, what lovely people. Have a great day

Thank you! Yes staying with them was brilliant- Ahmed was a real character…might do a post about him one day.

Happy birthday Phil 🎉! I hope there are some cake eating involved somewhere during the day …
What a great birthday celebration you had in Jordan – wonderful memories! I’m sure Michaela will stick with you for ever – you two have way too much fun and adventures together than to be apart!
Here’s a quote specially for you from Pablo Picasso: “It takes a long time to grow young” … I believe this quote was wrote with you in mind 😉.
Phil & Michaela
Oh I like that quote – and am very flattered to have it applied to me, thank you! You know the truth is, I’m 64 but inside I’m just the same bloke I was at 17…not much has changed really, not in spirit anyway. I guess the only thing you have to be hopeful of is good health (we are both blessed with that good fortune) – the rest of it is all down to yourself and your own outlook, really.

Happy birthday Phil! My husband celebrated his second lockdown birthday on the 6th and he’s just one year ahead of you, so last year was his 64th. Your Bedouin party reminded me a little of the cake the hotel chef in Ranthambore made for my 60th – it was huge and super-sweet so we could only manage a little, but it was such a lovely gesture 🙂

Such moments are special memories!

I was 66 last year and got my state pension. I was going to spend it on travel but then covid arrived and put a stop to all that.
Happy Birthday.
