Beautiful Places #2: Puerto Escondido
Those of us fortunate enough to be well travelled regularly have to field the question: “so where is the best place you’ve ever been?” And we all know that it’s an impossible question to answer, you can’t compare a vibrant city with a mountain village, a coastal resort with an ancient palace, or a hedonistic wine region with a spot by the sacred Ganges.
However, if pushed for a top five, Puerto Escondido would always be in there, and, moreover, if the question was couched as “where have you been where felt happiest”, we are both very likely to give the same answer. Blessed with a wonderful climate and backed inland by an imposing mountain range, Puerto Escondido boasts no less than seven separate beaches, each of them gorgeous and each one different from the other six, even in terms of the mood of the Pacific.
Add to that the two distinct halves of the town: below the freeway is an exciting seafront town with the “Adoquin”, where everybody heads at night, and a huge number of seafront restaurants; higher up the hill is the old town where you will find local Mexican life and all of the delights brought by that. Being in the Oaxaca state, this place is as much a food heaven as anywhere in the world we’ve been, has its own local tipple (mezcal) and of course the Mexicans love their beer. As if that wasn’t enough, prices of absolutely everything are seriously low, you’re never going to spend a fortune in Puerto Escondido.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside, miles of wonderful coastline, turtle sanctuaries, spectacular wildlife, great weather and breathtaking sumptuous food.
This is one place we would return to in a heartbeat.

Yes, who knows, but as soon as we are able to travel, we’ll be heading somewhere!

Fun reading about your ‘happy place’ out of all the places you’ve traveled to. Mexico will always hold a favorite spot in our hearts as Steven and I met in Zihuantanejo, Mexico, almost 40 years ago on St. Patrick’s Day of 1981 while ‘waiting on a long line in a small bank in a small town in Mexico’ as we like to tell the story!
Phil & Michaela
Oh Wow, a special place for you two then, great story too!! Love it!😁

Beautiful photos! Esther and I stayed a week in Puerto Escondido in March 2018. We agree that it was one of our favorite places too. We enjoyed some of Mexico’s best surfing on Zicatela Beach, the baby turtle release on Bacocho Beach, buying fresh fish right from the boats, and just lounging under an umbrella with a couple of cold cervezas. The bus trip from Oaxaca city was long and extremely winding, which keeps the tourist numbers down somewhat. Did you fly to the coast or endure the stomach-churning bus route?
Phil & Michaela
Yes Joe there was so much to do there as well as it being a beautiful place. We didn’t take the bus, we flew on one of the little 12-seater planes…Air Tucan I think it was.

Yes, from your photo’s I can see why this is a favourite place … when you mention beach, fish and beer in one post, you’ve got me hooked as well!
Phil & Michaela
Ha ha, well perhaps one day we may catch up somewhere on our travels and share a beer or too 🍻

That will be awesome … in the meantime, here’s a virtual cheers 🍻!
