Photographic Memories #6
As every traveller knows, when you look back through old travel photos, many of them trigger wonderful memories. With no current prospect of travel even domestically let alone worldwide, we will have no new adventures to blog, but we do have many such memories…..
Photo #6: Seaweed Farming
On rare occasions you look at a photograph you’ve just taken and immediately know it’s special. This photograph is one such, capturing the unique pale blue of the Indian Ocean and the vastness of the tidal reach, as well as the hard and lonely days of the workers. This is Paje on the east coast of Zanzibar, where seaweed cultivation is one of the few available sources of income, though squatting fully clothed in the water for 10 hours per day for little reward is a punishing way to earn a living. We’d reached Paje by bus from our base at Stone Town, heading out from what is probably the most chaotic bus terminus we have encountered anywhere in the world.

Love the way the seaweed farmer is silhouetted against the stark background. It really says everything about their way of life! Nice.

She looks sad doesn’t she, its a hard life for them. We have a photo of fishermen at the same place, we will have to post that one too 😁
