Photographic Memories #5
As every traveller knows, when you look back through old travel photos, many of them trigger wonderful memories. With no current prospect of travel even domestically let alone worldwide, we will have no new adventures to blog, but we do have many such memories…..
Photo #5: Mother Russia
What makes this photograph special to us is how it captures the very essence of the way we had pictured Russia probably since childhood: a frozen river, austere architecture, smoke billowing into the morning air from the tall chimneys of factory buildings, it is the Russia of our mind’s eye. This was sunrise in St Petersburg, captured as we made our way in temperatures way below zero to the railway station en route to the palace at Pavlovsk. By coincidence our return journey saw us back at the precise place where this photograph was taken, this time at sundown. We have a matching photograph, of course.

Excellent. I visited St Petersburg in June without the ice!
Phil & Michaela
It reached minus 27 while we were there – that was challenging! Spectacular city though…

I don’t suppose you got a canal boat ride then?
Yes, I liked St Petersburg and from there we went to Moscow.
Phil & Michaela
Ha no, no canal trip

You captured a fascinating look at St. Petersburg and indeed of Mother Russia that we never saw when we stopped in the city at the beginning of our train trip to Siberia.
Phil & Michaela
Thank you Annie, it was a beautiful city, and very cold when we went, -27. I guess you experienced extreme cold in Siberia, that’s some train journey you will have done! We want to visit Russia again one day and Moscow on our list.

Thank you 😘

Hi Phil & Michaela, In times like these, it is nice to have our travel photos and memories. I’m sure we will be back to making more in the near future.
Phil & Michaela
Well hi, Joe – long time no speak! Not sure how much of our year you kept up with but we managed sone lengthy trips in the end last year, albeit very different from our original retirement plan. Now we’re back in full lockdown with no idea when travel will kick in again, so just a matter of staying safe and biding our time. Hope you guys are keeping well.
Joe
We are well; but, it hasn’t been a very good year for this travel blogger. Fortunately, we have new leadership and real hope for better times in 2021. We are planning to do a domestic trip this fall and hope to resume our international travel plans next spring 2022. Stay safe, and happy travels in 2021.
Phil & Michaela
Thanks Jo, you too

Thank you for reminding me of a special winter, 1969/1970, swimming in an enormous outdoor Moscow pool now long gone and eating ice cream on the street afterwards. You brought a big smile onto my face.

Hi Steve, glad we brought back happy memories for you. Moscow is definitely on our list but not sure we could do it at the -27 we did in St Petersburg, perhaps we should go in the summer months.
